Knee pain
After neck and back complaints, knee problems are the most common musculoskeletal issue in the Netherlands. More than 3% of people deal with them every year.
Where knee pain comes from
- sports injuries and accidents
- overloading, or loading the knee in an unhelpful way
- wear in the joint
- inflammation, including bursitis
- recovery after surgery
The most common diagnoses
Knee osteoarthritis is the most common, with typical start-up pain after sitting and morning stiffness. Others we see often are patellofemoral pain around the kneecap, Osgood-Schlatter in growing children who play a lot of sport, meniscus problems after a twisting movement, and ligament injuries that leave the knee feeling unreliable.
What you can do yourself
- Keep moving. For almost every knee complaint, complete rest works against you.
- Build up in steps, rather than one heavy day followed by three quiet ones.
- Train your thigh muscles; strong legs take load off the knee with every step.
- With osteoarthritis, cycling and swimming are usually better tolerated than running.
When to seek help straight away
- your knee locks and you cannot straighten it
- it swells considerably within a few hours of an injury
- you cannot put weight on the leg
- the knee is warm and red and you have a fever
- the knee gives way repeatedly without warning
