Headaches are a puzzle
Did you know that, after colds, headaches are the most common complaint people bring to their huisarts (GP)? We all get them now and then, and usually they go away on their own.
Some types, however, last a long time and get in the way of your work, studies, sport or simply an evening with friends. And there are many different types, with different causes – and sometimes no identifiable cause at all.
Rule things out first, then treat
The manual therapists at STADS are happy to help you solve the puzzle. With a thorough screening, we first rule out that your headache comes from another health problem.
Only then do we look together at whether and how your symptoms are linked to your neck, your posture, your workload or your stress.
When does a headache come from the neck?
We are more likely to suspect this if the pain is on one side, spreads upwards from your neck or the back of your head, and gets worse in certain positions or after sitting for a long time. Often the neck is stiff or tender too.

What can you do yourself?
- Keep a record for a week of when the headache comes on. That pattern often tells you more than the pain itself.
- Vary your posture; sitting still for a long time is a common trigger.
- Pay attention to sleep, drinking and meals. They sound boring, but they matter.
- Be careful with taking painkillers every day; that can keep a headache going in itself.
When should you see your GP?
If a headache comes on suddenly and is extremely severe, if you have a fever with a stiff neck, if you have a headache after a blow to the head, or if you have symptoms such as loss of strength, speech problems or double vision. These need a medical assessment first.
What is a headache?
A headache is defined as pain felt above the orbitomeatal line (the line between the eye and the ear).
Headache is the most common neurological condition and one of the complaints GPs see most often. Well-known types of headache are tension-type headache, cervicogenic headache, migraine and cluster headache.
What does a physiotherapist do for headaches?
Headaches can have many different causes. The physiotherapist maps out which factors may play a role and whether treatment can influence them. Especially with tension-type headache, cervicogenic headache (stiff, blocked neck vertebrae) and some forms of migraine, physiotherapy can help to reduce and resolve symptoms. Think of exercise therapy to strengthen the neck muscles or improve neck mobility. The therapist will also pay attention to factors such as stress, sleep and how active you are. These are all factors you can influence, and they can play a role in how headaches start and why they keep going.
Am I insured for physiotherapy for headaches?
If you are under 18, physiotherapy is covered by your basisverzekering (basic insurance). If you are over 18, you need supplementary insurance. Every package has different conditions.
