Exercise programmes

Exercise with a chronic condition

Exercise is healthy, for everyone. But if you have a chronic condition, it’s extra important – and at the same time harder to judge for yourself what you can handle.

For that situation, we offer an exercise programme: training in a group, under supervision, at a level that suits your condition.

For which conditions?

When are you eligible?

When there is no longer a need for individual physiotherapy. The exercise programme is the next step: you’ve finished your treatment, but you don’t want to slip back.

That moment is exactly where things go wrong for many people. The supervision stops, motivation drops, and six months later you’re back to square one.

What is the goal?

That in the long run you keep exercising on your own. We build up fitness and strength, but just as important is that you learn to judge what your body can handle and that exercise becomes a habit.

In a group

You train with people in a similar situation. That works: you don’t have to explain anything, you see that others run into the same things, and you’re more likely to turn up because someone is counting on you.

Would you rather train on your own? Then take a look at medical fitness.

What does the exercise programme involve?

After a referral from your GP (huisarts), you have an intake appointment with the physiotherapist. To make sure it’s safe for you to start exercising, the interview is followed by a few questionnaires and fitness tests. Based on these results, and your personal exercise goals, a tailor-made exercise programme is then put together.

In a second appointment, you go into the exercise room with your physiotherapist. Together you go through the whole programme, with plenty of time to ask questions and practise together. If that goes well, you and your physiotherapist plan the rest of the programme.

Time to get to work! You now train for an hour, twice a week, for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, the fitness tests are repeated and you and your physiotherapist look at where you stand compared with the exercise goals you set. After adjustments have been made to the programme, you train again for an hour, twice a week, for another 6 weeks.

At the end of the programme, there is another evaluation. Together with your physiotherapist, you decide how you’ll carry on exercising.

When am I eligible to take part in an exercise programme?

You’re eligible for an exercise programme if your GP refers you for one of the following conditions:

  •  COPD
  •  Heart conditions (coronary heart disease)
  •  Diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus)
  •  Bone loss (osteoporosis)
  •  Joint wear and tear (osteoarthritis)

Am I insured for an exercise programme with the physiotherapist?

Reimbursement for an exercise programme is included in supplementary insurance packages. The level of cover depends on the terms of your policy. A programme may be fully covered, or you may be asked for a small personal contribution.

For more information, contact your health insurer, or call STADS. We’re happy to help you look into it.
