Geriatric physiotherapy

What is geriatric physiotherapy?

As we get older, mobility, muscle strength and balance can decline. Chronic conditions or other health problems can start to get in the way of daily life.

The geriatric physiotherapist specialises in treating older people and people with complex care needs, for example when they have several conditions at once.

For which conditions?

What does treatment focus on?

On improving or maintaining independence, mobility and quality of life. Always tailored to your situation, goals and abilities.

Maintaining is just as valuable as improving. With a slowly progressing condition, staying stable is often the best result you can achieve, and that takes just as much work.

Working with other healthcare providers

Because the problems are often complex, the geriatric physiotherapist works closely with GPs, geriatricians, specialists and carers.

That coordination isn’t a side issue. If you have several conditions, each practitioner gives you separate advice that sometimes contradicts the rest. We look at the whole picture.

For loved ones too

If you care for someone, you run into practical questions: how do I safely help them get up, what can and can’t I take over, and how do I keep going myself? We help you think these through, even when the treatment is for your partner or parent.

What is geriatric physiotherapy?

Geriatric physiotherapy focuses on supporting and treating frail older people.

Which problems can geriatric physiotherapy help with?

The geriatric physiotherapist supports and treats people who show signs of ageing, for example with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, a broken hip or after a stroke. The geriatric physiotherapist also advises and informs family members and carers, and gives advice on buying aids.

Am I insured for geriatric physiotherapy?

Reimbursement for (geriatric) physiotherapy isn’t part of the basic insurance, but of the supplementary insurance. This means you’re only reimbursed if you have supplementary insurance that covers it. The cover and the number of treatments reimbursed differ per health insurer and per supplementary package. Contact your health insurer to find out what’s covered in your situation.

For certain chronic conditions (MS or after a stroke), a chronic condition indication is available.

For more information, contact your health insurer, or call STADS. We’re happy to help.

What does geriatric physiotherapy cost?

Even if you’re not insured for geriatric physiotherapy, you can still see a geriatric physiotherapist. In that case we charge our practice rate. Click here for more information.
