Acquired brain injury
After a brain injury, it’s rarely about the big things. It’s the shopping you can no longer manage, the conversation in a busy café and the day that’s already over by four o’clock. That’s what we work on.

What changes
What changes after a brain injury?
When you have to deal with symptoms after a brain injury, life can suddenly feel complicated. Everyday tasks become harder, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the changes at once.
Often it’s not the big things but the small ones: the shopping you can no longer manage, the conversation in a busy café, or the day that’s already over by four o’clock.
What we do
What does the occupational therapist do?
The occupational therapist specialises in how a brain injury affects your daily functioning, and looks with you for practical solutions that make life easier.
First we map out what’s difficult, but just as much which functions are unaffected. That second part is often forgotten, and it’s exactly what you build on.

What we work on
What do we work on?
- memory, attention, planning and organising
- spreading your energy over the day
- dealing with stimuli and busy surroundings
- picking up household tasks, work or hobbies again
- aids and adaptations that make the difference
The goal
The goal
That you can carry out your daily activities independently again, in a way you’re satisfied with. Not the way it used to be – that isn’t always achievable – but in a way you’re happy with yourself.
Together
Together with the rest of your care
After a brain injury, several care providers are often involved. We coordinate with rehabilitation, the physiotherapist and, where needed, the speech therapist, so you don’t hear a different story everywhere.
Questions
What people often ask us
What counts as acquired brain injury?
Any damage to the brain that occurred after birth: a stroke, an accident, a tumour, an infection or a lack of oxygen. The causes differ, but the effects on your daily functioning are often similar.
How long after the injury can I still come to you?
Even years later. In the first period, rehabilitation focuses on restoring functions. Only after that do the questions about daily life often really come up. That’s what we’re here for.
Do you also come to my home?
Yes. With a brain injury, that’s often exactly where things go wrong and where the solution has to work. We can also take a look at your workplace.
Do you work with my other care providers?
Yes. We coordinate with rehabilitation, the physiotherapist and, where needed, the speech therapist or psychologist, so you don’t hear a different story everywhere.
