Fall prevention

Why fall prevention?

We’re all living longer, and staying in our own homes for longer too. Thankfully. But every four minutes, someone over 65 ends up in A&E after a fall – and that’s only 10% of all falls among older people.

The consequences of a fall can be serious. Not just physically: a fall can be a blow to your independence, your ability to look after yourself and your mobility. And, if you’re unlucky, to your wallet as well.

Fear of falling is a risk in itself

People who have fallen once often become more cautious. That seems sensible, but it backfires: moving less means less strength and less balance, and therefore an even greater chance of another fall.

Breaking that vicious circle is an important part of what we do.

When should you get in touch?

  • you sometimes worry about falling
  • you’ve already had a fall and want to prevent another one
  • you notice that your strength or stability is slowly declining
  • you avoid certain things because you’re afraid something will go wrong
  • you take several medicines that can make you dizzy

What do we do?

Together we map out your fall risk factors and look at how your personal situation can be made safer. That can be through advice, but also through treatment aimed at lowering your risk of falling.

Think of training strength and balance, walking with or without a walking aid, and learning how to get up if you do fall. That last one gives many people more peace of mind than they expect.

And at home?

  • Make sure you have good lighting, including at night on the way to the toilet.
  • Remove loose rugs and thresholds where you can.
  • Wear shoes with a good sole instead of slippers.
  • Have your eyes checked regularly.
  • Ask your GP (huisarts) or pharmacist whether your medication could cause dizziness.
