What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave is a form of treatment in which we treat painful areas of the body with sound waves that cause small shocks. These waves stimulate the tissue’s ability to heal itself: with a nudge in the right direction, your body gets back to work on its own recovery.
What does it work for?
Shockwave has been proven effective for conditions including:
- chronic tendon problems, such as jumper’s knee or Achilles tendon pain
- calcifications
- bursitis
- heel spur
- tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- shin splints
What happens during a treatment?
A treatment takes five to ten minutes and is given once or twice a week. It’s a bit tender on the spot itself, but very bearable.
You always get exercises alongside it. Shockwave kick-starts recovery, but the tendon only gets stronger by gradually loading it more. Without that second part, the effect is temporary.
When will you notice a difference?
Often after just two to three treatments. That’s not a promise: tendon problems need time, and shockwave shortens that process but doesn’t eliminate it.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a treatment method in which sound waves that cause small shocks (shockwaves) are delivered to a painful spot. The sound waves activate the tissue’s self-healing ability by stimulating blood circulation and bone formation.
What does a shockwave treatment look like?
First, a gel is applied to the skin. Using a shockwave applicator, the shockwaves are delivered to the painful spot. Each treatment takes five to ten minutes and is carried out once or twice a week.
What are the side effects of shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy has hardly any side effects. Straight after treatment, the treated area may be a bit more sensitive for a few days, the skin may turn slightly red, or there may be some mild swelling.
Am I insured for shockwave therapy?
If you’re under 18, shockwave therapy is covered by your basic insurance. If you’re over 18, you need supplementary insurance for physiotherapy. Every package has different conditions.
