Post-concussion syndrome

A concussion usually clears up within a few weeks. For some people it doesn’t. If you still have symptoms after three months, we help you work out how to build back up without falling back every time.

What happens

What happens in a concussion?

Around your brain is a layer of fluid that works like an airbag. If you take a hard knock to the head, your brain can still come into contact with the inside of the skull. That can lead to a concussion, and in some cases to a brain contusion or bleed.

When

When do we speak of post-concussion symptoms?

Most people with a concussion have fully recovered after a few weeks and can study, work and play sport again without restrictions. Some recover less well and have symptoms for longer.

If you still have symptoms after three months, we speak of post-concussion symptoms or post-concussion syndrome. Of the people who get a concussion, 1 in 3 still have symptoms after six months.

Building up

When can you start building up again?

Right after the injury, you’re usually advised to take it easy. But when can you do more again? And how? Should you listen to your body’s signals, or is it fine to push the limit a little?

That’s hard to judge, especially if you’re behind with your studies, your employer is getting impatient or you haven’t seen your sports friends for a while. That’s exactly what we help with.

What we do

What do we do?

STADS Occupational Therapy and STADS Physiotherapy help you find a balance between exertion and relaxation, with enough rest and room for your brain to recover.

We build up in steps you can keep up, and teach you to recognise when you’re going over your limit – ideally before you feel it rather than afterwards.

Questions

What people often ask us

Is a concussion dangerous?

Most concussions heal by themselves. If symptoms suddenly get worse, or you have vomiting, increasing drowsiness or loss of function, contact a doctor straight away. For symptoms that last beyond three months, we’re the right place.

Can I play sport with post-concussion symptoms?

Usually yes, but in measured doses and building up gradually. What’s too much varies per person and per week. Together we work out where your limit is and how to approach it without going over it.

Why am I so tired from doing nothing?

Your brain works harder for the same task. After a concussion, filtering stimuli, concentrating and remembering take more energy. It feels like being tired from nothing, but it isn’t.

Can I study or work again?

Usually yes, in steps. We coordinate with your school or employer about hours, tasks and a low-stimulus workspace, and build up at a pace you can keep up.
