Paediatric occupational therapy

What we do

What does a paediatric occupational therapist do?

Your hands are fantastic tools. As babies, we discover where our hands are and learn through play what we can do with them. That development doesn’t go equally fast for every child, and that’s usually not a problem at all.

Problems can arise, though, if a child is at risk of falling behind other children their age. For example with games, crafts or writing, but also with practical things such as eating with cutlery, getting dressed and undressed, brushing teeth or tying shoelaces.

What we look at

What do we focus on?

The paediatric occupational therapist helps children carry out daily activities as independently as possible: in self-care, learning, play and free time. We use play therapy, exercise therapy and conversations to do this.

We also look at factors that can get in the way of development, such as sleep problems, restlessness and emotional outbursts. These are linked to how a child functions during the day more often than people think.

Physio or OT

What’s the difference with paediatric physiotherapy?

Roughly speaking: the paediatric physiotherapist mainly looks at movement itself – strength, coordination, motor skills. The paediatric occupational therapist looks at doing: does your child manage to do what they want and need to do in a day?

The two overlap and often work together. We’ll simply discuss with you which one fits.

At school

At school and at home

The therapist may come along to school for a day to observe, or come to your home to practise. That’s exactly where your child runs into difficulties, so that’s where the solution has to work too.

Aids

Applying for aids

The paediatric occupational therapist at STADS Occupational Therapy also helps with applying for aids. Think of mobility aids such as a wheelchair, walking support or an adapted bike, writing aids, and aids that support school skills.

An application like that is often a paperwork maze. We know the way and take that work off your hands.

Questions

What people often ask us

Do I need a referral for my child?

Usually not. Occupational therapy is directly accessible, for children too. At the first appointment we do a short screening to check whether your question suits us.

Is it covered by insurance?

Children under 18 have no deductible (eigen risico), so the ten hours from the basic insurance come at no personal cost for them. Some supplementary insurance policies cover extra hours.

Do you also come to school?

Yes. That’s often exactly where a child runs into difficulties, so that’s where the solution has to work too. We always arrange this with you and with the school.
